Our story

EHWA is a social enterprise that was created with the intention of ensuring that every Australian school, institution and workplace has ready access to best-of-breed technology and up-to-date information in support of mental health and wellbeing.

The story started in the midst of an epidemic of self-harm and suicide among teenagers on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. It is a very personal story, born of lived experience. Co-founders Debbie and Stu Cameron found themselves in crisis when their teenage daughter Ash started to experience very serious mental health issues, culminating in an extended period of self-harm, mood disturbances and behaviour changes.

Faced with the urgent need to seek help, Deb and Stu found that it was extremely difficult to find the right resources quickly and easily. There were lots of institutions and support groups with information available online, but Googling literally hundreds of web pages when you’re in crisis just adds to the difficulties.

In discussion with Ash’s school, Barrenjoey High School, it was agreed that a solution would be built in the form of a mobile web application that puts all the critical information and links in one place which is easy to use and access. The web application was built using Unifii Operations Cloud, a platform developed in Australia by Deb and Stu’s company Unifii.

Working with the amazing people at Barrenjoey High School, within a few months the first Emotional Health and Wellbeing platform was born (www.emotionalhealthatbarrenjoey.com.au). The platform was a great success at Barrenjoey High School so the decision was made to make it available to other schools. Since the launch of the first version, this platform has made its way into school across NSW and continues to grow in popularity.

In order to make this technology available to as many schools, institutions and workplaces as possible, it was decided to found a specialist social enterprise that could provide all the technical and other resources required to deliver digital emotional health and wellbeing resources where they are needed. Thus, Emotional Health and Wellbeing Australia was born.

There is a wonderful twist in this tale.

Having comprehensively overcome her mental health issues, Ash decided to make it her mission to help as many children, teenagers and adults as possible to find the help they need so that they can live fulfilling lives and meet their potential.

Ash is also a Co-Founder of EHWA, and now leads the organisation with all the enormous passion, dedication and enthusiasm you would expect of someone who lived through, and then overcame mental health issues.

Please feel free to reach out to Ash to see how our amazing platforms and resources can help you too.
